Picking Up The Pieces & Cultivating Human Resource

Humpty Dumpty fell apart. The accident report reveals nothing about who he was or what caused the great fall. So why should anyone care about his unhappy fate? Perhaps because in many ways we are broken, too. His story is our story. It is no secret that humans have made a big mess, our debris scattered all over the face of the planet. As a result, earth and its inhabitants are in serious jeopardy.

Mr. Dumpty’s case speaks directly to the challenges we face at this critical crossroad in history. We have been selfish, immature, irresponsible custodians. Some grown-up steps are now being taken to address the deteriorating health of the land, the water, and the air we breathe. Stricter laws are being passed to help protect plants and animals who share our home. But what about us? Human beings are also vital natural resources. Indeed, the future is in our hands and there is no time to lose!

A long, unflinching look in the mirror is the first step toward maximizing human resources and restoring Humpty’s health. Next, summon the courage to set hopes and fears on the table and ask difficult questions about what kind of future we want to build together. Steep listening skill upgrades will be required. Our challenge is to gain wisdom from serious lapses in judgment that caused our downfall. Then, negotiate the groundwork for a more humane foundation based on mutual respect. This is our common ground. It must be cultivated wisely, an arduous task demanding rigorous discipline and unwavering commitment to the cause. Abraham Lincoln’s eloquent words at the close of his First Inaugural Address still resonate today, “We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature”.

As we move to enact our vision, let’s invite those better angels to serve as guides. We can choose to invest in a more inclusive social network that provides food, clothing, shelter, life-skills, and educational opportunities for everyone. By recognizing that we are only as strong as our weakest link, critical bonds of affection can be strengthened and restored. Leadership kits will be mandatory. Imagination and empathy, key tools in the kit, ignite creative fires and build confidence in the process. These creative tools make us more fully human. They help us to recognize ourselves in each other. When used responsibly, they can inspire new ideas, spark powerful conversations, sharpen minds, and enrich hearts. They provide the glue that all the king’s horses and all the king’s men could never find.

Creativity is the fruit of the imagination. It makes us more fully human and must be fully engaged as we seek healthy, productive ways to work together, play together, care for each other, resolve urgent conflicts peacefully, and celebrate the bounty of all earth’s resources. We are in this together. E Pluribus Unum.

CLP blossomed from the intrinsic mind of Matson Duncan. Although CLP has made its mark upon others around the country within the past few years, Matson has decided to make CLP public to the Austin community with the help of his savvy, smart witted office team. We are housed on the east side of Austin, TX and consist of 4 professional individuals: Matson Duncan, Stephen Guo, Ashley Lopez, and Brisa Silva.

The Cultural Leadership Project has been active in fostering a conversation with some of the brightest and most talented rising filmmakers at the Sundance Film Festival over the last 5 years. This is one of the great highlights of our year to come together and talk; talk about where careers and dreams are headed, where passions are driving and where our hearts cry out for something more than just a story to pay the bills. This year we are focusing on the intentions of hope as a main thrust for characters and story, what it looks like to tell a story that is true and honest and creative and powerful because of it’s connection to our own universal questions, doubts, fears, joys and hopes. We will be at the 2010 festival from the 21-24th, opening weekend, and mix meeting together for breakfast and seeing as many films as we can for enjoyment, to support our friends among the group there with a film showing and to spawn more discussion.

OK, I don’t know about you but I’m looking forward to freezing my butt off in Park City pretty soon. This is my third trip to the Sundance Film Festival with the CLProject, and I’m pretty excited about our forum this year and the films and events planned so far by the festival. I’ll put a link somewhere else as well, but if you’re coming out to park city here’s a list of things to know about put together by the good people out there…

The main thing to remember is that it’s cold. Really cold. But it’s also dry. Very dry. This is a good and bad thing. Good because it doesn’t make 12 degrees feel as cold as it does in Austin, TX right now (dang humid cold front!) but (BAD) it also dries you out very quickly. Make sure to drink water all day long. We all love to stop and grab a beer occasionally throughout the day to discuss the panels or films, and when we do, drink twice as much water because of it. If you’re not carrying water around with you (bring a small nalgene and clip it to your pack or belt, better than holding a crappy plastic bottle) I will personally make you drop and give me twenty… unless you’re bigger than I am, which most everyone is, in which case I’ll just make a snide remark about that headache you have coming. OK, enough about water.

As I noted above it’s cold. Two years ago it was snowing the whole time, which meant you were wet all the time. Last year it didn’t snow hardly at all, and was dry in the streets. This year??? Who knows. Go to Academy and get yourself some thermal underwear. I only ever wear the pants portion under my jeans and it helps tremendously. You’re outside as often as you’re sitting watching a movie and even then the theaters are pretty chilly sometimes. Don’t cheap out and get discount rack thermal undies either… at least go midlevel. You want them to have moisture wicking properties. Also bring some waterproof hiking boots. Trust me on this one. Two years ago we had a gentleman from Austria in our group who wore suede pumas and he was miserable with wet cold feet all day everyday. Gloves are good, but pockets work too, BUT – SOCKS are gold. A good pair of thermal hiking socks can make those little piggies happy from morning through that midnight horror screening. Those, by the way, rock.

OK, after that layer up with a t-shirt, sweater or sweatshirt and a good waterproof WARM jacket. Layer, Layer, Layer. I hate carrying a pack, so I make sure I only have what I need. Pick a jacket with pockets too, you’ll want it to throw the maps/plans/swag/gloves/beanie etc. while indoors. Oh, and bring a beanie hat or something to cover your head, and a back up incase it snows so you’ve got a dry one for the next day. Ear covering’s a must so if you’re hat don’t do it, find something else that does. No one looks cool in Park City, we all look like that poor little brother in A Christmas Story that can’t put his arms down. Live with it.

Well, that’s my gearing up installment, we’ll have more later!

Matt
